Patients with low vision or vision impairment for which glasses, contact lenses, or medical treatments cannot correct their vision, visual assistive equipment may be prescribed to help maximize their remaining vision. Visual assistive equipment is available for purchase at our Commonwealth optometry clinic.
What different kinds of low vision devices are available?
Optical devices may include magnification devices such as hand held magnifiers, stand magnifiers, spectacle magnifiers, and reading telescopes.
Electronic devices include video magnifiers that allow the viewer to modify the image shown adjusting text color, brightness, and contrast.
Non-optical devices provide adaptive aids to assist individuals with low vision in their day-to-day tasks. These include lighting devices, reading stands, large-print books, talking clocks, color-coded pill boxes, voice-recording organizers and more.
How do I know what device I need?
Set up an appointment with one of our doctors in the Low Vision Rehabilitation service.
Discuss what the particular tasks and difficulties you have on account of your vision. Our low vision optometrist will then create a customized rehabilitation plan.
Our low vision optometrists will determine what visual assistive equipment is most appropriate. They consider factors such as distance and time. They also consider lighting, or illumination.

At our Sacramento location we are taking the following insurance plans: VSP, Eye Med, MES, Superior Vision, and Davis Vision.
